If we're looking for a scenic Bavarian getaway, Lindau am Bodensee is hard to beat. This small island town sits on the eastern edge of Lake Constance, surrounded by the gentle waves of the lake and a backdrop of the Alps.
The combination of medieval streets, lakeside views, and a peaceful vibe makes it perfect for walking, photography, and relaxed sightseeing.
We immediately felt that this town offers a mix of history, culture, and natural beauty that's ideal for travelers seeking a calm escape.

Getting There: Transportation Tips

Reaching Lindau is simple for all types of travelers:
- By Train: Lindau Hauptbahnhof connects to Munich, Stuttgart, Zurich, and other major cities. Tickets from Munich cost around $40–$50 one way. The station is on the mainland, and we can easily reach the island via a short walk or bus.
- By Car: A road bridge and railway causeway link the island to the mainland. Parking costs $2–$4 per hour. Long-term parking for a full day is about $15–$18.
- From Austria/Switzerland: The drive takes about 1–2 hours depending on your location. The roads are well-marked, and border crossings are quick.

Exploring the Island: What We Saw and Did

The island itself is just 0.68 square kilometers (0.26 square miles), making it easy to explore on foot. Key highlights include:
- Lindau Town Hall (Rathaus): Built in the 15th century, with colorful frescoes. Open daily 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Entry is free for the courtyard; museum inside costs $5.
- Old Town Streets: Cobblestone alleys, colorful facades, and small shops perfect for strolling and photos.
- Harbor Area: Famous for the Bavarian Lion sculpture and lighthouse. Open 24/7, free to explore, great for sunrise or sunset photography.
- Lake Tours: We took a one-hour guided boat tour of Lake Constance for $20 per person. Paddle boats are available for $15 per hour.

Food and Dining: Where We Ate

Local dining is a highlight of Lindau. We tried:
- Cafes and Bakeries: Coffee and pastries cost $3–$6. Perfect for a quick break while sightseeing.
- Lakeside Restaurants: Fresh fish dishes, local Bavarian meals, $15–$30 per meal. The harbor area has some of the most scenic restaurants.
- Snack Options: Small stands offer sandwiches, ice cream, and drinks for $3–$7.

Accommodation: Where We Stayed

Staying overnight on the island is convenient, though slightly pricier than the mainland:
- Small Hotels/Guesthouses: $80–$120 per night, often with lake views.
- Bed & Breakfasts: $70–$100 per night, cozy and comfortable.
- Booking Tips: We recommend reserving in spring or summer in advance, as peak season fills up quickly.

Best Time to Visit

We found late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) to be the best times:
- Pleasant weather (15–25°C / 59–77°F)
- Fewer crowds than peak summer
- Beautiful scenery, especially when the lake reflects early morning light or autumn colors

Practical Tips for Travelers

- Wear comfortable shoes: The island streets are mostly cobblestone.
- Plan meals in advance: Lunch and dinner at lakeside restaurants may require reservations during weekends.
- Bring a camera or phone: Every corner offers postcard-worthy views.
- Local transport: Bicycles are rentable for $10–$15 per day if we want to explore the mainland.

Why We Loved Lindau
