Imagine a town where snow-covered peaks meet charming streets and adventure waits around every corner. That’s Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, a scenic town in southeastern France at the base of Mont Blanc, Western Europe’s highest peak at 4,807 meters.
With about 8,700 residents and a larger urban area around 12,200, it’s small enough to explore on foot, but packed with world-class skiing, hiking, and mountaineering opportunities. Whether we’re skiing, hiking, or just soaking in the views, Chamonix has something for every traveler.

Getting Here and Around

Chamonix is easily accessible from Geneva Airport, about 88 km (55 miles) away. We usually take a shuttle or rent a car—buses cost around $35 per person one-way. Trains also connect to nearby French and Swiss towns.
Within the town, transportation is simple:
- Local buses: Free for many zones with a hotel card.
- Cable cars: Must-try for mountain access. The Aiguille du Midi cable car takes us from Chamonix center to 3,842 m in just 20 minutes. Tickets cost $70 one-way / $110 round-trip (check online for seasonal discounts). Open daily 7:30 AM–4:30 PM.
- Montenvers Railway: Goes to the Mer de Glace glacier. Tickets $30–$40, open 8:30 AM–5:00 PM.
Walking around town is pleasant, letting us explore shops, cafés, and viewpoints.

When to Visit

Chamonix is amazing year-round:
- Winter (Dec–Mar): Best for skiing, snowboarding, and winter sports. Peak season is February, so expect crowds.
- Spring (Apr–Jun): Trails begin to open, fewer tourists, perfect for hiking and photography.
- Summer (Jul–Aug): Ideal for hiking, climbing, paragliding, and mountain biking. The town is busiest, so book hotels early.
- Autumn (Sep–Nov): Cooler weather, golden alpine colors, quieter trails.
We find spring and late autumn perfect for avoiding crowds while still enjoying clear views.
